The service operates as a subsidiary of IQiyi, Inc., a publicly listed company. iQiyi offers a mix of licensed television shows, films, anime, and original content primarily in Mandarin Chinese, with some subtitled international titles. The platform has grown to over 600 million registered users across Asia, making it one of China's largest streaming services alongside Tencent Video and Youku.

Why it's censored

iQiyi faces blocking and restrictions in at least two distinct regulatory environments, each with different stated justifications.

In India, iQiyi has been periodically restricted under the Information Technology Act, 2000, Section 69A, which grants the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) authority to block websites and applications in the interest of "sovereignty and integrity of India." The blocking has been attributed to broader geopolitical tensions between India and China, particularly following the 2020 Galwan Valley military clash. India has blocked numerous Chinese digital services during this period, including TikTok, WeChat, and UC Browser. iQiyi's content licensing practices—including its distribution of Indian content without explicit local regulatory compliance—have also drawn scrutiny from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In North Korea, blocking is more absolute. The regime restricts access to nearly all foreign digital services under its National Information Security Policy. North Korea operates a domestic intranet called Kwangmyong and permits international internet access only to a narrow elite. iQiyi, like virtually all foreign streaming platforms, is inaccessible to ordinary citizens. The technical reason is state-level filtering at the gateway level, rather than content-specific objections.
