As of 2023, the service reportedly reaches over 50 million subscribers across its operating regions, making it a significant player in South and Southeast Asian streaming.

Why it's censored

China implements broad restrictions on foreign streaming services as part of its regulatory framework governing foreign media content. The Chinese government, through the National Press and Publication Administration and Ministry of Culture and Tourism, enforces strict licensing requirements for all foreign video platforms. Disney+ Hotstar has not obtained Chinese broadcasting permits and does not comply with content pre-approval requirements mandated by Chinese regulators. Additionally, the platform's sports content—particularly international cricket broadcasts—falls outside China's state-controlled media distribution system, triggering IP-level blocking.

North Korea's censorship is categorical. The regime permits virtually no foreign streaming services within its borders. North Korea's Ministry of State Security and the Korean Central Broadcasting Committee operate an absolute monopoly on media distribution. Foreign streaming platforms, including Disney+ Hotstar, are blocked at the national gateway as part of broader information controls. User workarounds

Users in China attempting to access Disney+ Hotstar typically employ circumvention tools that mask their IP address and encrypt traffic, preventing ISP-level inspection and DNS tampering. Obfuscation protocols that disguise encrypted traffic as standard HTTPS connections can defeat DPI-based detection by obscuring SNI headers. Some users rotate through multiple proxy endpoints to avoid IP-level blacklisting. However, these methods face increasing technical sophistication from Chinese censors.

North Korea offers virtually no practical workarounds for ordinary citizens. The nation's closed network architecture and absolute state control make civilian circumvention attempts extremely difficult and politically dangerous.

Netflix operates in India but is similarly restricted in China through comparable IP and DNS blocking mechanisms. Amazon Prime Video faces identical Chinese censorship. Within regions where Disney+ Hotstar is unavailable, users have limited legitimate alternatives for equivalent content libraries, as most major foreign streaming platforms face similar restrictions.

Outlook

Censorship of Disney+ Hotstar in China shows no signs of easing. Chinese regulators have tightened foreign media restrictions since 2020, and Disney's limited cooperation with Chinese censorship demands makes official licensing unlikely. North Korea's restrictions are permanent absent major geopolitical shifts.
