Iran restricts Facebook intermittently, intensifying blocks during political unrest. Following the 2009 Green Movement protests and again during 2022 Mahsa Amini demonstrations, Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance imposed temporary or permanent restrictions. Russia moved toward outright blocking after 2022, citing Facebook's alleged bias against Russian state media. Technical Blocking Methods

User Workarounds
Users in censored regions employ several standard approaches:
VPN tunneling routes traffic through servers outside the censoring country, bypassing all local filtering. This remains effective where VPN protocols themselves aren't blocked, though several countries now restrict specific VPN usage.
Proxy services and Tor provide alternatives to VPNs, though Tor is blocked or throttled in China and Russia. Proxies vary in reliability; many free options log traffic or inject ads.
Bridge protocols and obfuscated VPN modes disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS to evade DPI and SNI filtering. This technique works in Iran and Thailand but is less effective in China, where the government runs active fingerprinting against known obfuscation patterns.
