What Etsy Is

Etsy launched in 2005 as a peer-to-peer e-commerce platform for handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. The Brooklyn-based company went public in 2015 and is now owned by Etsy Inc., a publicly traded entity. The platform operates in over 200 countries and serves approximately 96 million active buyers and 7.5 million sellers as of 2024. Etsy's business model relies on transaction fees and seller subscriptions rather than advertising.

Why Etsy Is Censored

Etsy faces outright blocks or severe restrictions in at least three jurisdictions, each with distinct political and regulatory drivers.

China represents the most comprehensive restriction. Beijing's internet regulators—primarily the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC)—have blocked Etsy as part of broader e-commerce gatekeeping that protects domestic platforms like Taobao and Xianyu. While China does not publish explicit censorship lists, Etsy has been inaccessible to mainland Chinese users without circumvention since approximately 2009. The block serves economic protectionism; foreign marketplaces that bypass Chinese payment systems and oversight mechanisms face systematic denial. Additionally, Etsy's user-generated content model creates regulatory friction with Chinese content moderation demands.

North Korea maintains near-total internet closure; Etsy is blocked alongside virtually all foreign commercial websites. The regime's "Kwangmyong" intranet allows only state-approved domestic services. Foreign e-commerce has no functional access point in the country.

Malaysia's restrictions are more recent and selective. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade have taken action against sellers offering items classified as prohibited—particularly products involving LGBTQ+ themes, materials deemed insulting to Islam, or items violating the country's Penal Code Section 298. Rather than a blanket IP block, Malaysia has practiced targeted content removal and seller account suspensions. The restriction gained visibility after 2020 when MCMC began enforcing stricter interpretations of online commerce regulations.

Technical Blocking Methods

Etsy's censorship employs different technical approaches by country.

China uses a combination of IP-level blocking and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). China's Great Firewall maintains blacklists of IP ranges associated with Etsy's infrastructure. Additionally, DPI equipment analyzes traffic patterns to detect encrypted tunneling attempts to Etsy's servers, blocking connections that match known signatures. DNS filtering also prevents name resolution of etsy.com on most Chinese ISPs.

North Korea's block operates at a more fundamental level: the country permits only government-controlled gateway servers with hardcoded whitelists. Etsy's domains receive no routing privileges.

Malaysia employs DNS blocking and ISP-level content filtering at major carriers (Maxis, Celcom, Digi). The blocks are inconsistent and sometimes content-specific rather than domain-wide, suggesting MCMC coordination with carriers rather than automated firewall rules.

User Workarounds

Users in restricted regions typically employ Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to route traffic through servers in unrestricted countries, effectively circumventing geographic IP blocks. Some users configure DNS over HTTPS or use alternative DNS resolvers. In China, where VPN detection has intensified, users employ more obscured tunneling protocols or obfuscation layers, though success rates have declined as detection improves.

Malaysian users often find that switching to a VPN service suffices, as active blocking is less aggressive than China's infrastructure.

Alternatives

Shopify operates more permissively in these regions, though sellers in China still face regulatory obstacles. eBay maintains limited service in some areas but faces similar blocks in China. AliExpress (Alibaba's cross-border platform) dominates in China itself but does not serve as an Etsy alternative for sellers outside mainland Asia. Facebook Marketplace operates in Malaysia without documented blocks, though content moderation disputes arise.

Outlook

China's block shows no signs of easing; protectionist e-commerce policy has hardened under recent regulations. Malaysia's restrictions remain under-documented but appear to be tightening as MCMC enforcement increases. North Korea's closure is structural and unlikely to shift. For independent sellers, expect continued fragmentation of e-commerce access along geopolitical lines.
