Why It's Censored

Dailymotion faces censorship in China and North Korea, though for distinct regulatory reasons.

In China, Dailymotion has been blocked since 2009 under the broader "Great Firewall" infrastructure managed by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). The blocking coincided with geopolitical tensions and reflects the Chinese government's control over foreign video platforms. Unlike YouTube, which faced blocking after the 2010 Ürümqi riots, Dailymotion's initial restriction appears tied to general foreign media platform policy rather than a specific trigger event. Users in China typically rely on circumvention tools to access Dailymotion. The most common approach involves Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, which tunnel traffic through encrypted channels to servers outside mainland China, bypassing DPI filtering and DNS manipulation simultaneously. Proxy services and Tor exit nodes also function, though these carry varying performance and detection risks depending on configuration.

For North Korea, circumvention is far more difficult. The isolated internet architecture means standard VPN tools rarely function within the country. Access requires either physically leaving North Korea or being in one of a handful of special economic zones with limited external connectivity.

Alternatives

Users seeking Dailymotion alternatives in censored regions face limited options. Vimeo, another independent video platform, is also blocked in China under similar CAC policies. BitChute, a decentralized platform, offers some resistance to blocking but faces intermittent access issues and hosts problematic content alongside legitimate material. Rumble, a newer alternative, remains partially accessible in China through certain proxy configurations, though blocking is inconsistent.

Outlook
